Race 1 - OH WHAT A FIREBALL!

John pulled the 17th position for the first race of the day for the RSCapp/MTS Legend. The track is short and very winding. “The harder you drive it the easier it comes” quoted John at the beginning of the day. “It’s important to get through the pack right at the start as this is a hard track to gain positions once the pack spreads out”.

True to his word, John had raced hard for the first five laps placing the RSCapp/MTS legend into the top ten. He took a place from Ross Marshall in the number 3 car who then pushed his red legend way to hard at the Devil’s Elbow, riding straight into the back of John, locking bumpers and driving directly into the tire wall at high speed. The impact from the bumper of the number 3 car split John’s fuel tank and as soon as the RSCapp/MTS legend came to a halt, it instantly burst into flames, almost like an explosion.  All onlookers waited with baited breath for John to emerge from the flames.  His vast experience gave him the knowledge to escape from the wreck and  John threw himself onto the gravel rolling, as a precaution, to ensure there were no flames on him.

John was instantly taken to the medical centre in their ambulance and was assessed for an hour as he had minor burns in his airways and hands where the flames had got through gaps between the overalls and helmet and gloves. Racing came to a halt for the team that day, but undeterred by his crash, John made an instant decision: The team was to return to base, collect the spare car and prepare for a new day on Sunday. “Thank goodness for my AWS overalls” said a shell shocked john, “they saved my life.”

Thank you to our MTS guest Jonjo Crawford for providing this great piece of footage!

Sunday 27th June 2010 – Round 7 – CPC UK Legends Championship – Lydden Hill

Race 1

John pulled the third place out of the hat.  The RSCapp/MTS Legend was soon battling with the reigning champion Lee Fitzpatrick for the lead.  With just a couple of laps to go, John’s number 4 car went three wide with Lee Fitzpatrick in the number 1 car and Ross Marshall in the number 3 car. Something had to give! John made contact with Lee and sent him into the tyre wall, allowing Ross Marshall and Stephen Treherne to take first and second place finish with the RSCapp/MTS legend finishing in third place.

Race 2

With a reverse grid start for the second race, John started just off the rear of the pack in 19th place, just in front of the Rookies. Everyone felt nervous wondering if the spare car would perform or had John lost the edge?  The RSCapp/MTS Legend did not fail to impress. The number four car, carrying the silver and orange livery, stormed up to 6th place, but on the last lap, the number 32 car of Peter Morton dived round the outside of John to take 6th place, leaving John in a very respectable 7th place.

Race 3

With points being amalgamated for the previous two races and with a reverse grid based on those points, John started near the rear of the grid again in 21st place. Another great start for the RSCapp/MTS Legend and with clean racing, John worked the number 4 car up to 10th place in a clean race. This left the RSCapp/MTS Legend just short of a podium position in 4th place overall on the day.

The weather was beautiful all weekend which meant that the VIP guests all had a chance to enjoy a relaxing time in  the beautiful sunshine within our Paddock Hospitality Awning.  We were delighted to see all our sponsors including David and Julie Twigg who are the latest marketing partners to join Mickel Motorsport in a bid to promote their websites at www.davidtwiggjoinery.co.uk and www.KitchenBitsandBobs.co.uk
